Hello, I am accepting a job in Glendale but, seriously thinking of purchasing a house in Thousand Oaks. Can someone tell me if this commute is doable or is it out of the question? I am from Dallas and love the TO area. Thank you for your advice.

It all depends on the time of day. If you leave at 5-6 am and hang out at a Starbucks, sure.

Doable in 45 minutes to an hour, but always need to consider freeway route---straight shot on the 101/134, or on the often less crowded 23/118/5.

I did the reverse (Pasadena and La Crescenta) to Calabasas for a few years, in rush hour traffic. I can tell you that you should consider buying closer to your job.

The commute took me 45 minutes (best) to 100 minutes (worst), each way, with an average of about 60-65 minutes. It can really wear you down by the end of the week.

I hear you, but for others, commuting is a kind of zen.

I've talked to many people over the years, in and around L.A., who like to be in their cars just to get away from work, family or roommate pressures. Their commute becomes the only 'alone time' they can get. They just accept whatever the traffic may be doing, keep their cool, and think in silence, or listen to books or music. Many creative types find that ideas pop into their minds while driving.

The library in T.O. does a brisk business in audio books for those who drive.

Depending on where your job is in Glendale, you might be able to commute on Metrolink's Ventura County line. You'd drive to the Moorpark or Simi Valley station, then take the train to Glendale station in downtown Glendale. Very comfy ride if it works for you.

If my start time is 8:00am in Glendale it sounds like I should leave at about 7:00am. Which is doable I guess!! Would the 23/118/5 be better then the 101/134? I know it is a little longer (about 3 miles only) but, it seems the commute time would be much less due to less traffic.

Would you say the morning or afternoon (4pm to TO) commute is worse?

I am also looking at house sin Stevenson Ranch (Santa Clarita) but, it seems like most people are recommending TO over Santa Clarita.

Unless you just have to buy now, I would urge you to consider renting for a year in Thousand Oaks while getting acquainted with the drive. Traffic considerations color just about everything you do in L.A. Commuting can be expensive, especially in time.

101/134 are usually pretty congested during commute hours.

I always took 210/5/118, which was longer, but the traffic was lighter.

I wouldn't do it and I would also leave earlier than 7am if I did. I don't really know how to articulate or describe it, but traffic here is different from Dallas. I'm currently in T.O. and was in Dallas the last 3 years, for reference.

Just FYI, this route is usually already pretty packed by 7:00 AM. Leaving at 6:30, or earlier will give you a easier drive (unless there is an accident, or rain).
