What? lol..

I think the last place a conservative wants to be is the east side. While trying to insult the west side you insult the east side making it look all conservative republican. Only thing I'd say being conservative are racist cops and north Glendale..

It has everything to do with your claim that the rich "snobby" west siders don't care about poor people. Yet they continue to elect liberal democrats who raise their taxes to expand the social safety net and increase the salaries of middle class state and local employees. The type of democrat that fits your definition of "liberal" doesn't exist in this country (maybe in Europe) so it's a red herring. Outside of perhaps New York City, and the Bay Area, the total tax burden of a wealthy person is probably the highest in the country on the west side of LA. Contrast the west side of LA with Orange County if you want a good comparison of rich liberals vs rich conservatives.

Why do you think that type of democrat doesn't exist in this country? Also, seeing that a country cannot sustain itself entirely off the limited growth of the market is not akin to caring about poor people. The only place in West LA where I see a real deal claim for social and economic justice is in WEHO, but that's a holdover from the radical liberationists not liberals.

And Americans should never attribute any social gains in history to rich liberals. A strong labor movement is what made these concessions possible. Just because there are many liberals willing to give a little more to not have socialism doesn't mean they all care about poor people.

Again the reason why that "type of democrat" doesn't exist is because that particular brand of social democracy has been amputated from the political discourse. If a labor candidate were to even gain power in this country, he would be eliminated, if not effectively marginalized.

that road has two way traffic, read the forum. the Eastside is the side of town everyone loves to hate on. let the westside get some of that business, who are they to care?

And I'm about as westside as it gets, actually from there and never left, not a midwest transplant, and I don't think I have any of those qualities. I have no issues with the eastside, I just have little reason to go there because everything I need is west (besides my job, which is near highland/vine area so I guess that's the border)

I will add this fuel to the fire though - the snobbiest people I've met in LA are the hipster/artsy types who live in Echo Park, Silver Lake, and Los Feliz. Some of them also live in North Hollywood, Studio City, Venice, and Downtown. They all think they're better than everyone and special, and if you're not like them they won't acknowledge, and most of them live in the Eastside. I'll take the midwest transplant working a yuppie office job in Santa Monica over some stuck up idiot with sucky art in Silver Lake who spends all day in a coffee shop stroking his ego and going to "local, better" concerts at night

one more thing: You mean to tell me those rich people in pasadena, san marino, and parts of sgv aren't snobby either? Especially those newly wealthy chinese who obsess over fancy sports cars?
i gotta concur on the echo park bit. i know i will be accused of snobbery myself but its a running joke in our house when we are all hanging out on the porch and we see some hepster walking down the street we all mutter, "go back to echo park!"

i am an artist and i guess i am hep, but why that naturally has to come with disdain for everyone else i will never understand.

yeah, i had a bad personal experience. i lived next to it for two years!!!!!

seriously tho, there is just a very antiseptic feeling there. its palpable. it doesn't feel real. venice feels real but it has gotten so SAMEY. it isn't really that interesting anymore. at least for my taste. and when the person going through your trash is an elderly asian lady with a cart behind her full of bottles something tells me that she isn't looking to swipe your identity. she might just be trying to eat?

Why do we even have public trash cans? It's just gives the homeless less of an incentive to work if they're getting free half discarded meals.

Echo Park is not totally full of hipsters the way Sunset Junction is.

BarcelonaFan,

Let's be clear, the west side is full of working people, as is the east side. The median household income in Santa Monica from wikipedia is like 71k. That's hardly a bunch of 1%ers who fit the category you describe. And it's not called the "People's Republic of Santa Monica" because it's some republican bastion. I just think you're off base here.

Back to the point of the thread, a point I was trying to make is the "snob" factor that all these respective subgroups have is relevant to the original topic because it contributes to people staying in their own area and not venturing to other ones. But it's a secondary one, the primary reason why people stay close to home is the areas are largely pretty similar in terms of the services they offer. The two regions are just not as different as some in this thread are trying to profess.

That said, I have no idea why my post contributed to some class warfare rant.

I wasn't talking about the general population of the Westside (of course I know that working people are the majority, it could be no other way). The number one reason why eastsiders do not travel to the westside is distance, the second is expense, and the third just well may be the snobby attitudes of a portion of it's residents (the portion my "class warfare rant" was based on).
