I am going to be in the Los Angeles area for 6 days in August, and I was wondering if Pasadena is a nice area to use as a base to explore the area from. I found a good deal on a hotel, and I'm not sure whether I should go for it. This will be my first time out to Los Angeles. (It seems like I've been everywhere in California except LA at this point...heh) Thanks!

Pasadena is lovely but some parts are better than others. What hotel is it? Also, will you have a car? LA is huge and depending on what you want to see, public transport isn't great and can be very time consuming. Pasadena is on the Gold Line rapid transit to downtown but I don't know how close your hotel is to the stations. A good place to stay without a car, if you're interested in the usual LA sites, is the Hollywood and Highland area (on the Red Line rapid transit and near tour companies and such). What are you interested in seeing?

I'm looking at the Pasadena Westin. I am going to rent a car because I figured it would be pretty tough to get around the city. Coming from Houston, I am used to even less of a public transportation system. :-D

I was trying to go on some studio tours, get in the obligatory visit to Hollywood, see the Queen Mary, Venice Beach, the Hollywood Bowl, Mount Wilson Observatory, Chinatown, Santa Monica...What else would be good to visit in such a short amount of time?

Pasadena Westin is fine. You are within walking distance of Old Town Pasadena (nice nightlife and shopping) and the Gold Line.

There is also a nice courtyard right next to the Pasadena Westin. A couple of decent higher-end chain restaurants (Mc Cormick and Schmick's and California Pizza Kitchen) are literally right in the courtyard next to the hotel. 1 minute walking, from the hotel. The area is safe also.

Cool. Thank you very much for the tips! Now I can just prepare to get myself lost in LA.

If you enjoy art, take in the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. Small museum, world-class collection.
