Lol! They are going to tear down Jordan Downs to make a Mixed Income Urban Center with shopping and a central park.

OP, aren't you currently in West Hollywood? I thought that West Hollywood had rent control, so wouldn't it be better for you to stay where you are currently?

Only select buildings in West Hollywood have rent control. Built before 1979 or so. The reason why WeHo is famous for rent control is that its primarily a renter's city with old buildings.

OP's budget doesn't allow for WeHo unless he lives in one of the scenarios I outlined in my earlier post. Dorm style living.

I think people here already gave you some pretty solid advice about the fact that for that price point you will have to do it FOB style and just find some decent people to call your room mates. The preferable situation would be to split a 1 bedroom, and have the person using the bedroom pay more. I have friend that did this in San Francisco while getting through law school. Just remember that WHO you're living with will matter much more than WHERE.

If you don't mind the commute, you can find a place around downtown Long Beach where the rents are much cheaper than L.A., and just take the blue line up. Still then, no studios for $550; not in southern California.

I did find this though: Bachelor - Great Location!

I did find these two using padmapper: E.LOS ANGELES APARTAMENTO SENCILLO NO DEPOSITO

Studio Unit for Rent

The only thing is that they are both in East L.A., so as long as you're cool in a largely Latino area, and don't mind working on your Spanish (ha-ha). The first one has the benefit of being only a couple blocks from the Soto station of the Metro Gold Line.

Ah ok, I thought the OP may have been in one of those buildings. I live in SF, and newcomers in my old building typically didn't stay long, even though the building was subject to rent control. Most likely due to the higher rents that landlords are currently enjoying.

Exactly. Anything that cheap will have two or more people sharing a bedroom, perhaps with bunk beds.

or someone like you, a young white guy with limited income, they share a studio or one bedroom, sometimes as many as 3 to one bedroom, i've seen it plenty. you make do.
Or they live in places that have bunkbeds in the bedroom, housing multiple people in one bedoom. You can do that on $400-$500 in LA. It might be pretty uncomfortable, though.
