I'm relocating to Southern California from the Midwest for grad school. I'm looking for a gay friendly and safe area to live that is within a reasonable commute from Pomona. From what I've read, it seems like Claremont or Chino Hills would be good options. Is this correct? Any more suggestions? Thanks!

EDIT: My definition of gay friendly is just my significant other and I being accepted. Not specifically looking for a party scene or the like.

Are you going to Cal Poly? I think Claremont would be a great place to live. It is a college town, so there are a lot of younger folks around. The old town/downtown there is great. There are tons of great, locally owned restaurants and shops. Chino Hills is a nice place too, with a lot of shopping, restaurant and entertainment options, a bit more corporate/chain--nothing wrong with that, but definitely a different vibe. Other areas nearby to consider: San Dimas, Diamond Bar, Walnut. Of all of these places, I think Claremont has more of a small town/bohemian vibe.

Thanks, Joe! I'm coming from a college town, so Claremont does sound nice. Are all these cities gay friendly? Out here, we tend to think of all of California as being progressive, but I realize that is not necessarily true.

Definitely look into Claremont.

Beautiful city and downtown area (Claremont Village). Lots of tall trees and lots of old houses.

I would suggest north of the 210 or as close to Claremont Village as possible.

I've lived in and/or frequent all of the places I've mentioned and I think they're all generally very friendly, open and welcoming areas. I'm sure there are still some ignorant people around, but I don't think you'll experience any blatant discrimination.

Thanks, Joe. You have been very helpful. Genjy, is north of the 210 because of safety or convenience of location?

Claremont north of the 210 is generally more affluent and prettier. The Claremont Colleges and Claremont Village are also north of the 210, so that's the quaintest part of the city.

All of the cities in the region are really safe, except for Pomona because it has a strong gang presence.

Cal Poly Pomona borders Walnut, and its location is pretty secluded. Pretty safe campus. No worries there.

Nobody in california likes happy people. The more miserable the better. But it is friendly towards homosexuals.
