The Chinese real estate group, Greenland Group, has purchased the Metropolis mixed-use development site located between LA Live and the 110 Freeway.

LA Times article link here:
Chinese developer buys major lot in downtown L.A. - latimes.com

This project has been incubating for 20 years in various incarnations. Looks like it finally has a very good chance to start constrcution THIS year. Phase I, as currently designed, calls for a 38 story residenital tower and 19 or 20-story hotel. Not clear, when or if, the retail component will follow.

I know there is another thread on Downtown LA but wanted to see reactions to this specific project. I think the developer is planning some tweaks to the design. So could be anohter 6 months before a real groundbreaking starts. Let's hope the final design is distinctive (and not bland).

Also, I really hope the design at the street level is a pedestrian friendly one that activates the streets.

Despite my criticsims in an old thread, LA Live at least tries to do that. Much more so than say The Gove on Third Street (which entirely turns its back to 3rd street).

The last thing we need is another Bonaventure Hotel....looks interesting from the Freeway but at the street level it is one huge concrete bunker.

This piece of property is a wasteland right now and is such an eyesore. I think some sort of construction activity will start very soon. I too hope it will be pedestrian friendly.

Yep, the construction fences/tarp are up, should be quite the development. But like ProjectMarsh said, hopefully the design is street-facing to encourage more pedestrian activity.

Yeah, I saw the fences/tarps up as well. But I heard they have to go back to the city for some minor re-design issues. I think they really will break ground in about three to six months. The planned ground breaking ceremony later this month is a photo op for the developer to start selling condo units to the Chinese public.
