The BH city council vote to boycott the hotel owned by the Sultan of Brunei. The Sultan recently instituted Sharia law, including death for gays.

Good. Just common sense and good business sense for the city council. After their subway fiasco, I'm surprised, they did the right thing here.

I feel bad for the employees of the hotel. They didn't do anything wrong, but are going to get screwed over.

Jay Leno likened the situation to the recent controversy involving Clippers owner Donald Sterling over racist comments he made in a taped conversation with his alleged mistress, “V” Stiviano.

“Let’s put it in perspective, the people in the Beverly Hills Hotel now are the Clippers, the Sultan of Brunei is Sterling,” Leno said.

Jay Leno Compares Sultan Of Brunei To Sterling In Hotel Protest « CBS Los Angeles

Sterling is probably thinking...great finally someone worse than me!

Sterling is a lot worse, at least he didn't want to kill gays or adulterers..
Of course then he'd probably have to kill himself too..
Isn't Sultan of Brunei and his brother known to have multiple wives and wild parties with women?..
Pretty hypocritical..

Yes and a nation adopting religious law in the modern age, especially such a retrograde one, is ridiculous. Beverly Hills is doing the right thing.

Agreed. It's more feel-gooding from a high horse without considering the consequences entirely. BTW, I wonder how many businesses will be boycotted because of their owner's support of an apartheid state known as Israel...

Nothing is stopping you from organizing a boycott of Israel if you feel that way. And I too feel bad for the employees. However, the profits are what are being targeted and it is sending a clear message with which I agree.

Way to show your ignorance and antisemitism. FYI, many businesses and universities are already boycotted and protested because of their affiliation with Israel. I take it you didn't hear about the whole Scarlett Johansson/Soda Stream debacle?

I too agree with the message. I was just pointing out that it's not just the Sultan who is going to have to suffer, but also normal Americans who did absolutely nothing wrong.

I hope this is not directed at me. In any case, yes I have heard of it. As for Israel, I support it's right to exist, but it does many things with which I disagree e.g. continuing settlements that do nothing but further raise tensions.

Now back to the subject matter: yet another country is regressing towards barbarism, hyper religiosity or rule by Islamists. Many others come to mind recently (NOT an exhaustive list): (northern) Nigeria, Sudan, Russia (the odd one on the list), Uganda, Malaysia, the Maldives, Libya, Pakistan (and to a lesser extent Bangladesh), and Afghanistan.

And a new one is Brunei. Perhaps you don't care that gays are put to death or live in fear of death. I do.

Way to attempt to poison the discussion by accusing me of being an anti-Semite. Furthermore, we both know ad hominem attacks are rather cheap, and are not permitted in the general realm of rational discourse.

Good. And let them continue to oppose Israel's racism, not only against the Palestinians who are segregated in the world's two largest open-air concentration camps, but against Israel's further racism towards the Sudanese and other Black people, who Ben Netanyahu referred to as "infiltrators" and expressed a desire to expel from Israel.

I heard about it in the brief media blip it got. Yawn...I'll start paying attention again when $3.6 billion a year of our tax dollars stop supporting a xenophobic apartheid.
