New carpool lane on northbound 405 finally opens today*-*Los Angeles Times

I don't make this drive all that often, but I'd be curious to see if these new lanes help reduce traffic in the area at all. Please post any first hand accounts.

Yay! Last weekend we took the southbound carpool lane from Sherman way down to Long Beach and it was open and functioning the whole way more or less. Glad the northbound side is catching up. Seems like they should have added a few more lanes while they had the machines out and were rebuilding it. Adding one lane won't do all that much. They could have added a two lane tollway and carpool like they did on the 110. That would have more than paid for itself.

If there's a new lane, it should be for everyone, not just for carpoolers.

Everyone pays taxes.

Says you as you drive everywhere alone in your gas guzzling car. Get some friends or drive someone to work, not that hard.

The next lanes should be lightrail or subway. Its already one of the widest freeways I've ever laid eyes on. It's hideous looking and ruins neighborhoods near the on and off ramps with the horrendous traffic getting on and off.

Carpooling is not that easy in L.A. People live all over the place. My friends live all over the place -- Culver City, Beverly Hills, the Valley, Pasadena.

L.A. is not a tightly condensed eastern city, with a small downtown, and surrounding suburbs. People in L.A. who can carpool are merely lucky in that they know someone else nearby, who coincidentally has the same destination.
