to be honest, i don't know if you will ever replicate that midwestern community feel anywhere in southern california. you'll find neighborhoods that we consider "family friendly" but that basically means that the streets are clean, there are other families living there, and there are lots of activities available for you to schedule your kids lives into eternity if you so choose; it doesn't necessarily mean that your neighbors care about anyone beyond their front door. i'm not saying they don't, but this just isn't that kind of place. people here request the post office to halt mail delivery when they go away;they don't ask their neighbors to pick up the mail for them. if that's the kind of "community" you want, you are unlikely to be happy here.

Thats a good question! I need to negotiate salary and a relocation package based on what it will take to get into a neighborhood I have described. I am not willing to downgrade the community which I live. So I guess I am looking at it from the other perspective. I would guess it will be less that $800K though.

Well, El Segundo is a great city. The family involvement is high, the schools are great, and the area is extremely safe. There are always children walking around by themselves and the parents don't care because they know their children are safe. I actually live in one of the surrounding cities and go to El Segundo High School. There are always little elementary school kids walking by with no parents. There is a nice park where parents always bring their children to play. If your child is in to sports, especially baseball and swimming/water polo, El Segundo High is great. Those are our two best sports.
Most of my friends live in ES so I spend most of my time there. In the summer, they have these really nice old, retired men that drive a shuttle through all of ES to pick up children and transport them to the beach for free. Oh yeah, ES is a beach town. But, the best beach is in the next city over, called El Porto, which is part of the city of Manhattan Beach.
Check out some places in El Segundo. I don't think you'll be able to afford a nice house, but a nice condo is doable at your price range.

A piece of advice, if something says ocean views or is west of Loma Vista Street, don't get it. There is the Hyperion plant on the west side of ES which is a poop purifier pretty much so it can get extremely smelly.

P.S.-I would either go for a home if you really want one, or the Grand Tropez. The GT is a beautiful, gated community with a community pool. Several students at my school live in there so it would be a great way for your children to meet some kids.

Then stick with Grand Tropez. They're more like townhomes, maybe even a regular home. But it's really nice that they have a pool and so many kids live there.
