I'm planning a trip with friends to California in Sept of next year. The resorts we are looking at staying in are in Oceanside, CA and Anaheim. I want to be as close to LA as possible, but some people want to stay near a beach. If we stay in Oceanside, is there public transportation from there to Los Angeles? If so, what is it and how long of a ride? Thanks

you won't be seeing much of LA if you stay in Oceanside. The drive by car without traffic (unusual) is nearly 1.5 hours and train will take even longer. that will give you little time to see the city before having to head back. even anaheim is 45 minutes to an hour away from LA. why don't you stay at a beach in LA like santa monica?

You can take Metrolink's Orange County Line to Los Angeles Union Station:

Orange County Line Schedule | Metrolink

San Clemente Pier Station is a great little stop if you want some CA beach experience... it's not a super-busy beach like many OC and LA beaches.

Thank you guys . I was only gonna stay in Oceanside because of others I was traveling with who didn't want to stay in LA. But after some thought it makes more sense to stay in LA.

Oceanside is the north end of San Diego County at the Orange County Border.

You can take Metrolink which is the commuter train (cheaper option) and around 2 hours from Oceanside but has limited hours because it is a commuter train so you have to leave really early.

Amtrak is the other option. It is more expensive takes about the same amount of time but has hours all times throughout the day/night. Both stop at Downtown Los Angeles Union Station where you can catch subways, light rail and buses throughout the LA county.

Here is a schedule http://www.octa.net/pdf/LOSSANSchedule_10614.pdf. You can find prices on Metrolink or Amtraks website.

If your friends really want to stay in Oceanside, but you want to see more of LA you can consider going to LA in the morning, checking it out, staying overnight in a hotel in LA and leaving the next day like the evening so youll have all day to sightsee. There are cheap hostel dorm beds in hollywood and cheap hotels/motels along the subway lines.

FWIW the first part of the train ride, as you leave Oceanside, features some nice beachfront scenery. There's even a station right at the foot of San Clemente Pier, though if you're on Amtrak you probably won't stop there. Somewhere further along in OC the line turns inland and north of Anaheim runs mostly through rather unattractive residential areas and industrial/warehouse districts. Still, I'd rather ride through it all on a train than drive through it on the 5.

Along the train route, San Clemente Pier , San Juan Capistrano, Orange, and Fullerton have either pleasant villages or, in the case of San Juan Capistrano, historical significance. Frankly, paying daily train fare to and from LA would be LOTS cheaper than any hotel room you can find in LA. Just start early in the morning and stay long enough to take an evening train back. Believe me, unless it is a museum, many of the points of interest will LOSE your interests in LA less than an hour and you will want to move on to the next one or just head back to Oceanside, and then return to LA the next day.

This is good advice. I lived in L.A. & O'side & often took that train route. The beach scenery from the train gives you a really nice SoCal beach view. San Clemente & San Juan Capistrano are relaxed beach experiences...you should take in the mission at the latter stop. The O'side & Carlsbad ( just south of O'side) beaches are big & sandy & not too crowded... you will be glad to be there after a crazy day in L.A!! Also, you could take the train from O'side to San Diego, with more beach stops along that route.
