Hi all,

My names Cory I live in Blackpool a town in England I'm 19 soon to be 20 and currently studying a degree in counselling and psychotherapy and wanting to pursue a career in that sort of direction. Part of this ambition is to go to America specifically Los angeles when I finish my degree I am also doing part time counselling work to build up experience. it's my understanding that to get a visa to work in the states I have to have skills that an American would not have let me know if I'm correct about this ? However this is not the main question the main question is are my ambitions stupid and also is there a demand for counsellors in the states ? I have been wanting a this life of living over in the States since I was about 15 and I know how hard it will be to achieve but I think a little advice from you guys will help

Please let me know what you think I would really appreciate some advice and help.

Thanks and take care

Yes read this forum and many others in C-D and you will see ample evidence of the need for psychotherapists.

Let's trade places for a year. I'd love to chill in the UK for a bit.

Search for psychologist returned 94 jobs. As a comparison, search for nurse returned 1,755 results. Check their VISA requirements. Good luck with your plan.

In California, but not in every state,

A Bachelor's Degree will get you:

Working with Developmentally Disabled:
https://www.dds.ca.gov/ICF/QIDPRequirements.cfm

Or in Chemical Dependency: (does not actually require a degree, but it is a lot faster to have one and then do working hours)
https://www.caadac.org/ladder/

Or as an low-level aide in a psych hospital. Some don't even require a degree.

A Master's Degree is needed for:

Licensed Educational Psychologist:
Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP) Requirements - California Board of Behavioral Sciences

Or as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist:
LMFT License Requirement - California Board of Behavioral Sciences

A Ph.D or Psy.D. is needed for:

Psychologist
California Board of Psychology

If you really want to live and work in the states, the absolute best way to do it is to learn web development...html, javascript, css, etc. Technology is where the jobs are.

If you have some skill and a good portfolio, you can find an employer who will help you deal with the visa issues.

I think trying to work in a licensed profession like counseling is going to be much harder.

But counselors are not psychotherapists.
