I'm new to the city (11 days so far!) and am looking for some music events to go to. I've noticed that a lot of the artists I like will play underground shows and warehouse parties. One example is an R&B singer named Kelela. She's at a point now where she's touring internationally, but I heard that she still does some warehouse shows with her LA label. The thing is, how do you find out about these shows? It seems like they're very secretive; I don't see any posted on standard event sites or blogs. Do you have to know people to hear about them or are there particular sites/Facebook pages/Twitter accounts that announce them?

Both. We're very exclusive about who may attend, but if you're cool, we'll let you know about them.

Keep your eyes on blogs like LAist and Racked regularly. These blogs are general LA blogs and not just about music but a lot of these smaller events get announced on blogs.

The exclusive ones, of course, aren't mentioned on those mainstream blogs.

Pick a club that gets a lot of music you like, then start hanging out there and making friends. Don't ignore small venues because those are the easiest ones to make friends in. Don't worry if it's not hip and happening because sometimes those are the places the pros hang out in (they like to be fairly anonymous).

Thanks! I'll check out some places. I'm usually bad at just "hanging out" at places (I usually go somewhere for an event and then peace right out at the end), but I guess I gotta expand my comfort zone.

True, but a lot of these shows aren't really "exclusive" all of the time. They just aren't widely publicized. A lot of the time, LAist will give away tickets to one of the more "exclusive" shows.

This is a great way to do it. Similar situation up here in the Bay Area.

This is going to be so hard for me, lol. I'm really bad at just "hanging" at places. I usually come for an event and then I'm gone as soon as it's over. Do you guys just have a few drinks and chat with people there? I guess I need to get out of my comfort zone, but I don't even know how.
