I haven't seen any recent information about commuting 405 south. Is the commute from North Long Beach to Costa Mesa okay now? Also DTLB?

That is not a fun commute. Traffic is very heaving on the AM 405 South and PM 405 North through Westminster and Fountain Valley.

You have to go early. I'm near the 405 and commute to Irvine a lot and it's a crappy drive. It's not the worst by LA standards, but it is still jammed up pretty good from Huntington all the way to Costa Mesa, assuming you leave early enough, it can be backed up to the 710 if you leave a bit later.

my wife used to make this commute and she would take PCH. the amount of time on the road was about the same, but the views were much better.
