I feel like a lot of the trolls were from out of state. It is a perfect demonstration of the ire so many have with California for some inexplicable (okay not inexplicable) reason.

And as we all know, Urbanize LA (thanks DD) has pretty much become their number 1 source for material. I just head there for any development information (and sometimes a thoughtful discussion in the comments). Curbed is better for goofy cultural things and links to Eater and Racked.

I got the feeling that the same type of people who like to complain about LA here also frequent any forum or comment section about LA, real estate in particular. Some don't actually live there, or maybe they did for awhile but....

The "what can you rent for..." stuff always invited the folks who told about the mansions they had in WHEREVER for less than the cost of the studio in East Hollywood. That stuff adds nothing.

And of course, I LOVE LA! What a hoot. Going to go register a domain name now

Curbed LA's blog articles aren't particularly all that great, so I just really go for its comments. Lots of bickering, but there was a lot of good info within those silly comments as well.

I am pretty sure the site is seeing a huge drop in traffic with comments disabled. You could tell the comments were a huge draw.

I think a lot of people feel this way and I think my visits have declined too. Still, the threat of falling viewership doesn't justify the way some commenters were being excessively rude in the comments section.

If Curbed culls out individual comments, people whine about censorship. If they do nothing, the excessive trolling poisons the comments area anyway and on top of that Curbed likely loses bloggers a lot faster than they otherwise would, particularly when those trolls are overly focused on the writers. They probably have a writer shortage already to begin with since I notice recruitment posts every once in a while.

Very roughly, I think the comments are much more likely to be enabled when the post is by a guest writer. It's the posts by the regular bloggers that usually seem to be disabled with a few exceptions here and there.

I like Curbed, for being relevant to my interests, but like Yahoo News, LA Times or other major newspapers, Too Many Trolls. Basically, "comments" on a newsarticle should be a link to another page, not hosted/cluttered on the same page.

I guess in the future you will have to lean forward into the webcam and confirm your retina prints match your Facebook profile, and then you might get permission to post comments.

Orwell was right, just off by a few decades.

Why we can't have nice things. It was more about political arguments than the articles. I like curbed. Its funky, amatuerish, and modest.

I've never commented on a curbed article, but I did see interesting comments with useful information from time to time. With the exception of one or two unnecessary political tirades masquerading as articles, I thought the potshots at the writers weren't needed. You probably need pretty thick skin to put up with that for what I can assume is negligible pay.

I thought about submitting a sample to work for them freelance, wrote half the article and thought better of it. Better to write the internet anonymously for much better pay.
