Hey all,
I recently moved to California from NY/Philly area and been in Sacramento for about a year and some friends have moved to LA.
I have a day job and doing some work in comedy on the side. I am looking for a house sharing situation or room for around $600/month or so. Is this doable?
Anyone recommend any resources? I am SWSM, 43 and single no kids. Hoping to rent in a good area of LA or suburbs. Burbank a possibility.
I am wary of Craigs List, but looks like lots of listings. Just not familiar with LA. Thing is, it's a 7 hour drive from where I am and need to find a place the end of November.
I don't want a party house of 25 year old twits like Brad Pitt's character in True Romance or SDI bums that are able bodied to work. We don't have many of those back East. I just assume live with people in there 50's or responsible working people who won't steal my stuff.
On the plus side I have no criminal record, in the same career for over a decade. Can someone list the safe places to live and/or the ones to avoid. I don't need to be downtown just a quiet neighborhood with good access to public transit. Have a car, but don't like driving in the city.
Thanks!!

Highly doubtful unless you are willing to rent a couch. I just moved to a new 2 bed/2 bath in Glendale. I looked at a lot of 2 bed apts in Glendale/Burbank and I'd say it's impossible to find something below $1500 and I would say avg now is $1600-1800. So even $1500 divided by 2 is more than $600. I was renting a 2 bed in Glendale by myself 5 years ago for $1550 and I rented the second room for extra money and was able to get $1000/mo for it. You can probably find a room for $600/mo in LA but you're going to have to lower neighborhood expectations. Maybe not as low as Compton but probably a sketchy part of Van Nuys or Panorama City

You may want to up your housing budget by about 1K if you're going to reside anywhere in the LA area. You may be able to swing renting a room for a shade under 1K in Hollywood, Koreatown, North Hollywood where there is access to transit. You mentioned being in Sacramento. Renting a room for $600 may be feasible in Sac but not in So Cal. You may have to move out to the San Gabriel Valley or the Inland Empire.

I'm in Glendale and I split $1300/mo with another guy, $650 each. It seems like everything else is more expensive, but the place I have is nice enough.

Have you tried Padmapper.com? It sort of aggregates a bunch of apartment website info into a Google Map. Worth a look.

You might wanna look at Koreatown, Westlake, East Hollywood. Rented a studio there last year for $750. They have plenty of nice $900 apartments and it's not that far. East Hollywood is pretty nice neigborhood. $500 for a room is definetly doable there and you can get pretty close to actual Hollywood. Glendale and Burbank as other people said are more expensive, but you can still get a $600 room there if you look more. There's just not many offers like that
