Oh it's room now. I got this thread confused with the other thread the OP posted that said "apartment".

Room for $800 is a decent budget.

Yes I did ask about an apartment but I don't mind renting a room. But people here seem to think it's a bad idea renting to rent a room.

Depends. Renting a room is often much cheaper and much easier to get approved for (if you're credit impacted). You simply have to share common areas.

Cons are that well, you share common areas (bathroom, kitchen) and there is less privacy. Also you need to be able to get along with whoever lives in the house or apartment, so you need social skills.

It is not a bad idea. Otherwise, you won't be able to live in LA on the budget you have. Sometimes having a roommate can even be a better living situation than not having one.

And generally speaking you will be able to get into a safer/nicer area when just renting a room than a cheap apartment. Just be careful about who you select to live with. I'd meet them first and make sure you are compatible.

What sites would you recommend for finding a roommate?

I noticed some asks for a deposit so I would be paying double the amount for the first month?

Correct. When renting you pay a deposit (in case there are damages when you move out) plus first months rent. If you've never rented before you might want to google Renting 101 or something so you have some info going in.

Some aren't asking for a deposit do you think looking on Craigslist is a good idea?
