My wife and I have been here a few years, and are looking for some other places to walk around or to hike. We've done the obvious ones like Santa Monica 3rd st promenade, and our current favorite Main st in Santa Monica/Venice..

Others we've liked so far are Montana St in S.M., Little Tokyo, and Silver Lake.

AS far as hiking stuff - up by the Hollywood sign, and Griffith park are a lot of fun. Will Rodgers too.

Any other favorites from people for a "city-like experience" , and for hikes?

Melrose was interesting when I visited there in the 1990s.
Old Pasadena has all sorts of neat restaurants (only been there in the evening and for dinner and ice cream).

Old Farmers Market, though crowded on weekends.

On a trip to the Griffith Observatory we found a paperback book about hiking trails in LA area (which I don't have at hand at the moment). Next time you hike in the park maybe you can pick up the book.

My favorite hike in all of L.A. is in Big Santa Anita Canyon and a visit to Chantry Flats. The trailhead is only a short drive into the Angeles National Forest, but feels a world away from the city. The trail leads to Sturtevant Falls and is picturesque filled with cabins and running along a stream.

Eaton Canyon is also awesome and worth a visit. Good hiking.

We really love going to the Malibu Colony Plaza, right off the PCH. The shops are pretty upscale and expensive, but it is a nice getaway for us. They also have some good sandwich places, a Starbucks and Coffee Bean and a few restaurants as well. There is a playground for kids and picnic tables scattered around - we go there to relax, sit in the sun, and people watch. We have seen quite a few celebrities while hanging out there. You can go to Zuma Beach in Malibu and take a hike - it is really easy and there are stairs part of the way.

Another celebrity hotspot is Robertson Blvd., which has some trendy boutiques and restaurants. It's another good place to get a coffee and people watch.

Calabasas also has a little shopping area that we like going to. It is fun to go to the Calabasas Farmer's Market on Saturday, and then walk around. The shopping area has boutiques, a book store, restaurants and a Starbucks, of course.
