Very disappointing. They had live bands, and it was a fun place to eat with a great view of the runway -- kids especially loved wandering around outside and looking at aircraft. The owner seemed a little sleazy to me and I believe he had an interest in the restaurant upstairs that was serving an illegal meat, but I really wish somebody else could have stepped in and kept Typhoon open.

Sounds like they got a big rent hike and the city is trying to push out businesses located in the airport to accelerate the closure of the airport

That article infuriates me.

Quote:
The restuarant is being forced out after the City tripled its rent in an effort to remove tenants as it tries to shutter the embattled airport, Vidor said. The skyrocketing rent would have caused financial ruin, he said, adding that he doesn't want to re-open in another location.

What a lovely bunch of people they have running SM....

Damn I ate there once and wish I had gone more often. A restaurant with edible insects is not exactly common in the USA.

Yeah that just doesn't seem right . Do you know what their plans are for the airport once it's just down ?
I don't blame the guy for not wanting to reopen in another space .

I just don't see much upside in opening a business in la or Santa Monica or la area these days with sky high rents , crazy regulations and the coming $15 min wage . Especially a business like a restaurant.

I talked with the owner (Brian Vidor) 2 years ago, and he said then that he knew it would be closing, due to the probable demise of the airport.

I spoke with him in late 2010 and back then he was really enthusiastic about Typhoon. It was a really good place for a restaurant and it had a great atmosphere. I'd much rather eat there than most other boiler-plate bistros (no pun intended).
