I am a canadian that wants to move to LA, I have looked into Visa's and saw the HB-1 and the TN-1 but just wanting to know of anyone that as done it or has suggestions. I don't have a career that is under the list for the TN-1 but am looking to get into a position somewhere in PR and Marketing. Any info would be great. Thanks a ton.

Hey,
As a fellow canuck who looked into moving to L.A a few years ago, let me just warn you that it is pretty difficult to get a visa. When I looked into moving what I found was that you need an employer to sponsor you and they have to sign something saying that there are no qualified Americans to perform the job. I gave up and decided to get into nursing which is covered by NAFTA. Some of the NAFTA categories are a little ambigous so if you could find a job that narrowly qualifies you it would be so much easier. Good Luck. I'm counting down the days to my escape....it's still a while off though.

Thanks for the information. I was thinking about doing the same thing. Not sure if nursing is the one but possibly something else on the list. Where abouts in Canada are you leaving from?

I picked nursing as it was either that or social work/teaching. I looked at the stats and realized that nursing was the way to go...aging population, little chance of being outsourced and a world wide shortage made it a no brainer for me.
I'm coming from Vancouver. I need a change. Where are you coming from? It might just be a matter of a little upgrading for you to fulfill the NAFTA requirements. It is really very easy for a Canadian to get into the states if they are in a job covered by NAFTA.

I forgot to mention, one thing I have heard some Canadians have some success with is internships. If you can do a 3-4 month internship in L.A then you would probably have a much better chance of securing a visa after building a relationship with the employer.
