New subway cars for Metro Red, Purple lines will be made in China — and America

So the Red and Purple lines are getting ready to replace their subway cars, and they signed a deal with a Chinese company. The cars will be assembled in Massachusetts (components made in China). The subway cars will have usb charging ports for phones. This same company is building subway cars for Boston and Chicago, and is bidding on subway cars for NYC.

That's great, except for it being a Chinese company. OTOH, they do own us now so I'm not surprised.#therealreconquista

Maybe the US should have a company that makes subway cars.

China's subway systems and cars are light years more advanced than anything we can find in the US.

Now I just hope LA can build the new stations on the purple line to be just as innovative and futuristic as the ones in China and Asia.

Though up to now I always thought Chinese subway cars were imported to China. Though I now I believe that they make their own.

Though one thing one should know about subway cars in China or Asia is that there are much less seats compared to the current trains we have in LA metro. Makes more sense there as subways get very crowded and more seats means less room for standing passengers. Though will the new Chinese made trains have much less seating than the current trains LA metro have now?

They make their own subway cars in China and these days Chinese companies including CRRS export subway cars. They make them to the specifications of the transit authority that is buying them. So LA metro will give CRRS the specs on how much seating they want on these subway cars and CRRS will deliver them as ordered.

The Chinese will not only be making new subway cars for the L.A. system but for other American subway systems as well.

The contract is expected to go to CRRC MA, a subsidiary of a major railcar manufacturer in China ------ >CRRC Qingdao Sifang and CSR America, but a new player in the United States. The company opened its first North American office in Boston in 2015 and is building an assembly plant in Springfield, Mass., scheduled to be completed in October.

That facility was built in A DEAL with Boston's Transit Authority. To build its new lines of transit cars as the LOWEST BIDDER and promise to build this Springfield plant on US soil to build them.

CRRC MA has contracts to build cars for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and Los Angeles’ Metro, but so far has not produced a single American rail car. Add Chicago too (to be built in a separate plant in Chicago) and now they got Philly's order also...

- Boston's in building a new plant in Springfield, Mass.

- Chicago's to build its new transit cars on a New plant on its Southside. In its 2-Billion makeover of some L lines. 1/2 to be matching funds from the government the city gained.
But that now is ONE CHINESE company building transit CRS for 3 - 4 MAJOR US cities as the lowest bidder and carrying through with promises to build them on US soil.

** CRRC Qingdao Sifang and CSR America building both Boston's and Chicago's, Philadelphia's and now LA's
HAS HAD PROBLEMS with those for Singapore it built:

https://qz.com/724156/the-chinese-co...-in-singapore/

Boston's
-- In October 2014, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority awarded CRRC:
a $567 million contract to build 284 subway cars for Boston. The project included building a $95 million factory in East Springfield, Mass. The bid was 50% cheaper than competitor Bombardier’s bid, the Boston Globe reported.

Chicago's
-- the Chicago Transit Board awarded CSR Sifang’s US joint venture a contract to make its “next generation of metro cars,” as Mayor Rahm Emanual said at the time. CSR Sifang will initially make 400 cars for Chicago for $632 million, but could supply 846 overall, for a total value of $1.3 billion.

CRRC to build up to 846 metro cars for Chicago

The Chinese company was the lowest bidder, beating competitor Bombardier by $226 million, Railway Age reported. As part of the contract it will build a factory on the south side of Chicago to assemble the cars, which will employ 170 people.

Philly's --
CRRC MA’s bid of $137.5 million was $47.2 million less than the bid from Hyundai Rotem, a South Korean firm. The bi-level cars are designed to be pulled by 15 locomotives scheduled to arrive next year, and will help move the more than 65,000 riders who use Regional Rail each day.

While there has been a lot of stagma on made in China products, it appears Chinese subway trains are surprisingly well designed and have a great safety record. There only had been a few freak incidents up to date with systems built in Chinese cities.

China makes great cheap subway cars. America makes and exports other vehicles to China. This is how trade works to all of our benefit.

Where the subway cars are made or what the stations look like are not the problem. It's the sort of people who take the subway (and buses) in LA. Too many are crazy, criminals or illegals. Normal people prefer to drive even in horrible traffic. I read that actually fewer people than ever are riding the new subway. Our Loony Leftist masters are trying to turn us into NYC. Well, if people wanted to live in NYC they'd stay there!
