I was at my aunt and uncle's home in Rancho Palos Verdes. At one point I took a break from watching the television live feeds and went over to the top of Crenshaw Blvd. which looks down on a large portion of L.A., and I counted approximately 100 fires. I thought to myself, "I'm glad I'm all the way up here where the rich people live, but I do need to go down the hill eventually..." However, no personal incidents to report, although I didn't venture east of the 405 until everything cooled off (figuratively).

Less than a year later the film Falling Down was released, and everybody thought L.A. was on the cusp of a race war -- there was even a Newsweek story about it with Michael Douglas' character on the cover. And then the whole thing gradually ran out of steam, everybody cooled off, and here we are.

We were living in Texas by then, but it still was covered pretty 24/7. What I do remember were the 65 riots. We were not in Los Angeles anymore, but living in Marin County. The reason they are so vivid in our minds, we had just sold and closed escrow on our home near in south central Los Angeles about a week before. It was in the curfew area and probably would never have settled if the riots occurred a week or so sooner. I am sure the buyers would have backed out. Of course, living so close brought back memories and we knew the area, every street that was mentioned etc. It was only the second time anything of news had us glued to the TV constantly. The other time was the Kennedy assassination.

"I taped L.A. Burning, a 25 year memory of the LA Riots.

Gosh, it seems like a while ago but not 25 years. I was in my 2nd year of teaching then. The day after the beating, LAUSD decided that any school south of Adams would be closed, while those schools north of Adams would go ahead and open.

What is your memory of that week?"

I was not in L.A. But my sister was and she was doing freelance photography at the time. She got a photo (that she took) published in one of the free L.A. newspapers of a group of citizens holding a hose trying to douse one of the fires caused by rioters.

There was a riot on the streets
Tell me where were you?
You were sittin' home watchin' your TV
While I was participating in some anarchy

At the time, I worked up on Signal Hill. They still had us come in to work, but from that vantage point we could see several fires being started in different areas throughout the morning, so they finally sent us home, and I went home and holed up in my apartment.
