Do you think 19 an hour and picking up shifts and overtime , plus a roommate ( my girlfriend ) would be able to afford living in la ? 1200ish budget. Or would we be buried out in the valley miserable ?

You don't say where you work so this is just a random suggestion. Here's a listing in Highland Park that fits your budget. HP is centrally located, has a couple of Gold stops and a variety of shops, cafes, bars etc.
The internet is your friend. If you can stand a studio apartment you could even look in places like Los Feliz, Pasadena etc.

I don't know about Orange County or Santa Ana but I would choose Burbank over LAX as I doubt you would find anything affordable near the very messy (traffic wise) LAX.
Burbank itself might be a viable option. Los Feliz could work and Highland Park/Eagle Rock are fairly reasonable commutes. You may have to be willing to go up a bit with your budget in Burbank although I saw a two bedroom on Craigslist for $800.00 per month which must be a come on to get calls and find out it's gone but we have one for far more. Who knows.
Anyway, if you can stand a studio that opens more doors in Los Feliz and the other areas of course.
I believe you can find something decent near your budget (preferably with parkin), you just have to hustle!

I'd choose Burbank; the area is a lot nicer and safer than around LAX. Also, living in the Valley is not like being "buried" as it has a population of at least 1.85 million people and every shopping and cultural thing you'd need. It's not a backwater town.

It's not going to work in LA. Maybe for a studio in a decent area or as a roommate in a two bedroom

Depends where. A relative just moved out of a one bedroom apt on the border of Torrance and Gardena and had been paying $1050/mo. They were now asking $1200. Not a rough drive to LAX. FWIW moved to a very large 2bd2ba in an ok part of Hawthorne at $1550/mo and that’s a very easy drive to LAX.

It might work renting out unused servant's quarters at the back of somebody's property, or a room above somebody's garage.
