There is a group of 30 (and even 40)-somethings regularly in HB, but they seem to be of the sort who still think they are still frat boys. If that works for you - go get you some! Otherwise, I agree with the posters who would steer you to Manhattan Beach. South Redondo would be ok too.

Thanks guys. I'm trying to get a place in Manhattan or Long Beach. I chose these areas b/c I'll be working at UCLA Harbor Medical Center and need to commute there. I'd like to be in a place this is nice, would like a view either or water or the city, and is in an area where I could walk to things like shops/ coffehouses / restaurants / post office etc. I'd like to keep it under 1700 per person which I think it doable with a roommate or two. However, on craigslist I haven't been able to come up with anyone who is willing to spend up to that much a person. Is there another roommate list around for LA?

westsiderentals.com can you help you with a roomate, but its $60 to join. Also, good luck finding an apartment with a view, especially in Manhattan Beach. Most apartment buildings in southern CA are 2 stories and the ones with beach views are outrageously expensive. This may be doable in one of the high rises in Long Beach though, but I'm sure those also are very expensive.

I recently saw a few small rentals/studios for about $1800 but that was about 1 block from the beach.

You should be able to find someone willing to split a $3,500 monthly rent and that will open up quite a few more opportunities. You might want to check some of the local bulletin boards at the grocery and local papers in Manhattan.

Also, consider doing a walking and driving tour of the areas because several units are posted for rent locally only along the strand and side streets. There are a couple of local real estate offices and property management offices in town/across from the Kettle Restaurant. In playa del rey, there is a management co: Matilla Management, by Moe's, that has a bulletin board listing rentals.

For a college age guy, you should really reconsider Hermosa Beach. I've found Manhattan Beach to be more upscale for sure, but Hermosa is still plenty nice, and the pier area is great, especially with Sharkeez opening up again. You could find a 1 bedroom by yourself for $1800 probably in Manhattan Beach, or just get a studio in Hermosa for like $900 and pocket the other $800/month! If you want roommates, I'm sure you can find those too. But why spend more than you have to?

Move to Hermosa, you'll love it. The strand is set up for young males. Manhattan Beach is considerably more expensive and not set up for young people/night life, nor does it have night life. Stay away from LB, the commute will kill you. You'll get cheap rent and trade it for major time in your car when you'd like to be doing something else.

Pier Ave in HB is fun every night of the year.

If you are looking for a bar scene, Hermosa is your town. Otherwise, Manhattan and South Redondo. A little more affordable is South Torrance, it's only 1-1/2 miles from the beach.

How about these three cities compared to Santa Monica/Venice?

I am moving in a couple months and my location is going to be decided by where is fun for a young, party guy, and not too far from LAX. Cheap would be nice, but if SM/Venice would be better I'm willing to pay a bit of a premium.

The very first night that I spent in SoCal was at a motel in Manhattan Beach back in 1980.

Unfortunately; I did not stick around enough to feel the 'vibe'-------hindsight being 20/20, my choice may have been correct knowing I could never afford to live there.
