New college grad got job offer to move to LA--never been before. Will be planning a trip to scout out the area and find an apartment. What are some semi-affordable, safe and nice areas for young professionals/couples? Good shopping (maybe a Trader Joes nearby), nice restaurants/cafes, nightlife. All those things are probably wishful thinking but need a place to start. Any other advice for a newcomer appreciated. Thanks.

Will you need good public schools (username)? Can you afford at least $2,500 for an apt?

No kids, so public schools aren't an issue, can afford $2500, but that would probably be the limit. Thanks.

Try looking around the Palms, West LA, Sawtelle, Rancho Park areas. Within your price range, reasonable travel time to Santa Monica and UCLA, reasonably well served by public transport if you need it, easy access to the 10, there are quite a few TJ's/Whoole Foods in the area. Generally, the closer to Venice, Wilshire, Sawtelle or Santa Monica Blvds, the better served you'll be for restaurants, etc. Not far from the beach. Not necessarily the hippest areas, but not completely uncool either.

The northwest edge of Mid-Wilshire.

You'd be pretty centrally located between Staples Center and UCLA. It's safe, and you could find a decent place in your budget. There's a Whole Foods on the corner of 3rd and Fairfax, as well as lots of other places for shopping and eating across the street at The Grove. You'd also be close to LACMA.
