Based on Craigslist, if I search for a 2 bed 2 bath with washer dryer in unit as the only required amenity I get the following results:

$4,000+ in Culver City !!!!

$3,500-$4,000 in Glendale

$3,200+ in Pasadena and Burbank

what gives? Can anyone suggest decent (safe, clean and 2 bed 2 bad with W/D in unit) apartment communities in these areas where I could get a place for $2,500, or $2,700 max?

I am currently in the DC metro area, where the cost of living is supposed to be higher than the Greater LA area.

But I am still paying significantly less, $2,200 / month for a nice 2 br 2 ba with lots of solid amenities in the apartment community, and it's just 20 minutes outside of downtown DC.

By comparison these LA rents are wild!

Rents are nuts here! Here is one example of a more reasonably priced rental. Highland Park is close to downtown LA, lots of shops, cafes, etc. and metro stops (light rail) too.

The most desirable parts of L.A, typically west of the 110(ish) all the way to the water, are quite crowded. Hence the high prices. A lot of people commute east to an area they can afford.

Should have asked earlier: is in apartment w&d absolutely necessary? Most apartments do have laundry on site. This one item makes a difference in rent.
Also, will you be working, if so where? LA is huge, it would help to define you locale need a bit.

Office will be in DTLA, S Flower Street and one possible client location is in Pasadena. Client locations can change though.

W/D in unit is not a total dealbreaker, but almost kind of a necessity. I have had less than pleasant experiences in using shared laundry rooms, and it will also be inconvenient for my parents who will be moving with me.

I should add that I still have a few months to go before I am able to move as I am still in grad school. Not sure how the rent will fluctuate between now and July. This is just me doing some research ahead of time.

Thank you for this rec! I will look more into Highland Park, haven't had a chance to go there yet on my previous visits.

HP is directly between downtown LA and Pasadena. You can take metro both ways, so very convenient. It's a pretty walkable area with parks etc.
You might check out Los Feliz as well. It's adjacent to Griffith Park, trendy but laid back and a decent commute to downtown LA.
BTW, Griffith Park is an easy drive from HP, so if you or the rents like to hike around, it's a great place.
