Food and recreation areas are two things. The Point in El Segundo is probably the shopping plaza we visit most often. It isn't a typical indoor mall, but I remember reading that they were aiming to be "the South Bay's outdoor living room". It's a small shopping plaza, with the shops and restaurants hemming in a courtyard that has a little lifeguard play structure and grassy lawns for kids to run around (and where one of the stores also holds yoga classes on Sunday mornings). There are also fire pits and plenty of seating. We'll go there for brunch or an early dinner and then let the kids run around while we sit and grab a smitten ice cream or smoothie.

Whenever we go there, there are kids and families everywhere. Since it's right across the street from Manhattan Village, I hope that MV has noticed how popular The Point is and incorporates some of that formula into the new design. My only knock against The Point is that while we like the restaurants, the store brands aren't the ones that I would usually shop at.

I went out to Santa Clarita the other day and walked around the Valencia Town Center. I saw that the old 2-story Sears was shuttered. One of the workers in the main area of the mall said they were turning it into a Costco?

Now, that is bizarre! A 2-story Sears becomes a Costco? This is a new thing, for sure!

To me, the worst was the beautiful, two-story J.W. Robinson's with a winding staircase, on Colorado in Pasadena, becoming a Target.

One company is headed by a sleazy hedge fund manager, whose main objective is to sell valuable properties - like the one in Santa Monica right near the beach.
He acts like the guy from Pretty Woman.

The other company sells good products for fair prices.

I don't go to malls much. I grew up with them in the 70s and really frequented them in my 20s during the 1980s, but they don't have anything I want anymore. That said, the few times I've gone to malls they seem to being doing OK in the Central Valley. The big anchor stores are kind of fading away, but the small retailers are alright.

Oh, and Fry's Electronics does seem to be fading away as well. Can't believe the difference in the last ten years.

I think that some malls are dead while others manage to thrive. In my area of NY State, Destiny USA mall is still a destination. Lots of people flock to it because it is not only a mall but an activity destination.

Depends on the mall I guess. We love going to the Grove and Hollywood and Highland. Also Universal City walk is very nice. The Americana at Bland over in Glendale is a nice place to visit.

In our area the Collection in Oxnard is nice. Over in Ventura they have a large 2 story mall that has gave up the ghost. Very few people visit and the place is on life support.

Nope. They just finished construction on a brand spanking new mall in Norwalk, CT. Just opened.
It includes a Nordstom, Bloomingdales, and a brick and mortar Amazon store.
Who would have thought!

I recently stopped by Beverly Center and wonder what the hell happened to the food court? How can there be a mall with no food court? Yes there are some restaurants on 1st floor but that is nowhere near enough.
