How about Round Rock--Austin, Texas suburb

Los Angeles/So. Cal is unaffordable for a young adult getting started in life that wants to live a high quality of life.

Seriously, not everyone wants to live in Podunk!

The OP might want to live in Houston for a cheaper Los Angeles.

Just the thought of trying to pick a place that's semi-convenient for 3 or 4 people to live and commute from sounds very daunting.

It's not impossible to find a 3-bedroom apartment for <$2,500.

You should consider that one of the roommates will have to move out, and you'll have to find a new roommate easily. That means that the area must be desirable for students and close to public transportation.
