Thirty years ago, plumber George Holliday was asleep in his Lake View Terrace apartment when he was awakened by a commotion outside so loud it prompted him to grab his video camera and walk to his balcony to see what was amiss.

With a hovering Los Angeles Police Department helicopter's spotlight providing the illumination, the scene Holliday captured with his Sony Handycam changed history.

It was March 3, 1991, and through the lens of his camera, Holliday recorded four white Los Angeles police officers using batons, stun guns, feet and fists to beat a Black man later identified as Rodney King, whose name quickly became globally synonymous with police brutality.

Definitely a horrible part of L.A.'s history.

Thirty years ago, on March 3, 1991, Glen King went out drinking and driving with pals until a patrol car spotted his car speeding on the freeway and gave chase. After a short pursuit, Glen parked and climbed out of the car. Then, upon direction from Sgt. Stacey C. Koon, the officers proceeded to pummel Glen, cracking his skull and leaving him with permanent brain damage.

The rest is one of the darker chapters in L.A. history, during which most media joined law enforcement in vilifying Glen as a violent felon on PCP who probably got the beating he deserved. A year later an all-white jury in nearly all-white Simi Valley acquitted Koon and three other cops, triggering the worst race riot since Watts

What? Why is there a children's museum inside a dam?

It's hard to believe that was 30 years ago. Seems like only yesterday. Rodney King, the LA Riots, and the OJ case kept LA in the headline news for a several years. There are many compelling documentaries about all 3 subjects one can potentially binge watch all day and all night long.
