I am visiting Santa Monica in July and staying in the Travelodge on Pico Boulevard, could anyone tell me what the surrounding area is like or if there are any areas to avoid. Thanks

it's not a bad area, but it's not a very exciting area either. you're about 10-15 minutes from the beach and you'll also have easy access to both the 10 and 405 freeways. safety should not be a concern here.

Pretty quiet area, not unsafe in my opinion. IIRC, there should be a Santa Monica Big Blue Bus you can take down Pico to the beach/Main Street/Promenade for $0.75 each way.

Big Blue Bus 7 will go up and down Pico and take you over to the Promenade area.
