Voters in Councilman Kevin de León’s district have little confidence in him, and as a scandal involving racist comments continues to dog him, a majority want him to resign, a new Los Angeles Times poll shows.

The poll paints a grim political picture for De León, the former state legislator and once-rising Democratic star who has adamantly refused to step down, despite a chorus of calls to go that has reached from protesters at City Council meetings to President Biden.

After a nearly two-month absence from the council, De León returned last month, hoping to repair his reputation and promising to fight for constituents in his Latino, working-class district.

Only 23% of the voters surveyed approved of the job De León is doing, compared with 48% who disapproved, the poll found. Just over half think he should resign, compared with fewer than a quarter who want him to stay in office and 18% who were undecided; 9% did not answer the question.

If a recall were to qualify for the ballot — an effort to qualify one is currently circulating petitions — 58% would support recalling him from office, compared with 25% who would be opposed and 17% undecided, the survey found.

The poll of 400 registered voters in Council District 14 was conducted Jan. 10-16. It has a margin of error of 4.9 percentage points.

Agreed.

That "activist" was essentially acting as a fascist brownshirt harassing a public official during a family-oriented event.

Perhaps the dude could run for office instead.

Btw, I can't stand de Leon, but he represents an office and deserves some basic respect.

All LA has to do is stop paying him. I’m sure he’ll disappear very quickly.

Ethically impossible. The only possibility is recall.

There were lots of reasons I wanted to leave Ca. Newsom was in the top 3. The winters here take getting used to but spring and fall are spectacular

Cool! Know many folks who moved from LA to escape Gavin & The Crazies, but hadn't heard of moving to Idaho.

Regards from sunny Florida, where winter is spectacular and summer is a massive pain :-)

Kevin de León has started his 2023 just the way he wants: slithering his way back to a sense of normalcy.

He’s showing up to City Council meetings and posting updates on social media as if the last 2 1/2 months of last year didn’t happen — as if a leaked tape that captured him, two other councilmembers and a labor leader uttering bigoted nonsense hadn’t upended L.A. politics.

Gone is the councilmember who spent his December trying to rehabilitate his image by handing out freebies to constituents, physically and rhetorically slamming activists who tried to shame him into resigning, and appearing on national and local media to reiterate why he was staying put.

Quieted are those same activists, who en masse disrupted the first couple of City Council meetings De León attempted to attend with their bodies and jeers and are now fewer in number, resigned to booing whenever De León enters the council chambers.

Quieter are De León’s fellow councilmembers, many of whom demanded he step down in the wake of the leak and who walked out when he returned to City Hall after a two-month break. Now, they just grit their teeth and hold their noses during meetings as they continue with city business, lest their constituents suffer because of one deluded, defiant colleague.

In early December, the Los Angeles city clerk allowed a group of residents to start collecting signatures in a recall attempt against the councilmember. It’s the fourth time he’s faced one in less than three years — the previous ones failed.
