If the Jungle is that bad, what other areas would you recommend(which are within 1/2 hour of CSU Dominiguez Hills)?
I'm from Chicago and my grandmother had a building off E. 55th when the Blackstone Rangers had that whole area under lock back in the day. I don't know how long you have lived in that area but if you are young and white, I'm guessing you haven't lived in the vacinity of Englewood that long. As you know that area is under totally gentrification because of the park and being right at the beach. In 5 years that area will have more whites I guarantee. If you leave that area now and try to come back you may not be able to afford it. I'd stay there if I were you, not unless you just want to get to the LA sunshine and get out of the cold.

Its amazing how so many judge the place by a television show or what they have heard. I lived in the "Jungle" for 10 years. 3850 Coco Ave #10 and I survived without entering a gang, without using drugs. The police and/or the ghetto bird (helicopters) were not out nightly and the gang activity was not daily. Within my 10 years of residing there I saw numerous fights and 1 gun fire incident. I attended some elementary school, junior high and attended Dorsey High School with positive influences on me. I completed college with 2 BA Degrees. ITS NOT WHERE YOU LIVE, IT IS WHO YOU ARE. You have to know who you are to live anywhere.

I should also add that I'm a young white man coming from the mid-west. Anyway, I was wondering if it is relatively safe living in that community for someone of my ethnic background and age(obviously I wont interact with the gang members or start any beef with anyone)?
Thanks in advance

I want to revive this...being that I'm looking at apartments in this area. It's been 5 years since this thread has had any action, so I want to know currently, if the jungle is still as unsafe as people have previously stated. The prices are good here for a nice apartment, and I have to make a decision soon, so any comments and feedback are welcome! Btw, my husband is from Brazil, and I am an LA born Filipina woman and we are in our early 20's...so I already know we would be the minority there...just wanted any updates in the last few years on the area. Thanks!

Couldn't you have asked this in the other thread you resurrected?

To answer your question, you should be fine. Where exactly is the apartment?

There are 2 I'm really interested in. One is on Stevely, and the other is on August. There's also another nice one located on MLK Blvd, but I don't know if I'd really like to live on such a busy street. I can't stand the noise of traffic at night while I'm trying to sleep.
