Honestly, I'm somewhat suprised that things have stayed together so well since then. We've had huge changes since then...

-Housing has tripled or quadrupled

-People have gotten pushed farther and farther out of the city (for affordability)

-Gas at $4.50!

-Wages are nowhere near where they were then.

-Increasing gap between the rich and the poor.

-Huge decline in manufacturing. Weakening of labor unions.

And all kinds of other issues. Demographics. Traffic.

Does it have to do with the LAPD instead of the economy? Are people too distracted and entertained now to notice?

Seems like life was paradise back then, you could buy a house for $200,000. And gas was a dollar something. What do you think the factors are?

Give it another 15 years. Rodney King was almost 30 years after Watts. Except the next one will be Atzlan'ers rioting.

When the conditions are right, it will happen again. That's because the underlying causes have never been adequately addressed.

I repped the three posters who answered above me for their informed opinions. My own deduction from the past is that the horrific '94 Northridge earthquake, which scattered so much destruction in so many widely dispersed areas around the Southland, somewhat diffused much of the incipient tension temporarily, because it so closely reminded all that our problems range far beyond the socio-economic here in Los Angeles; i.e., we are all of us in danger from uncontrollable forces. Out of towners aren't aware of just how much cleanup and reconstruction was necessary, from freeways to peoples' lives.

If Obama loses by less than five points in November, you might well see a replay.

I agree with katenik and first of all, the '92 riots accomplished nothing except further impovershing already impoverished areas. Crenshaw Blvd is just now (16 years later) recovering from it. Most people have simply given up and have left or are leaving. What's the point in fighting a losing battle?

The point is to make a change. Africa is fighting a losing battle with poverty/AIDS/starvation/civil wars. We are all fighting a losing battle with oil prices. The states bordering Mexico are fighting a losing battle with immigration. Should we just call it quits and give up? I don't think that this reflects the America that anyone of us was raised in or wants to be a part of.
