I mean back in the day, the Long Beach beaches was populated with families playing at the beach like Venice Beach. They used to have big waves. But things the LBC beaches popularity started to decline - no more big waves, hardly anybody there.

What has happened to the beaches over the years?

Breakwaters ........... If you want waves for surfing, etc. go to Seal Beach, Orange County or up in Santa Monica.

Long Beach beaches are not a pretty place to say the least, not to mention the oil rigs.

Like everything in LB, there is variety across the city. The beaches and bays are pretty nice along the Peninsula, Naples and eastern Belmont Shore. It's the downtown area that suffers from the breakwater and LA River.

I used to spend a good amount of time in the Belmont Shore area and there are no waves there, none. However, this does make the water popular with kite boarders. That is a pretty interesting sport to watch.

by the way, there were lots of people on the beach this weekend for sea festival which had the pirate daze. Lots of family fun.

And as always, there were about 500 sail boats, kite surferes, etc in the water and plenty of volley ball on the beach.

This is the best resource to check water quality levels in Long Beach. Looks like Belmont Pier and west is nasty, but everything east of Belmont Pier is OK. I always check this before getting in the ocean.

It's not pretty, but Dog Beach does its job and then some along the peninsula.

Back in the 1970s I remember jelly fish all over the place at Zuma. When was the last time you saw a jelly fish?
