It was said tongue in cheek. Someone thought that the reason the SFV was in the news more frequently was because of LAUSD. LAUSD is the second largest school district in the nation; of course it would be more newsworthy than some random southern California school district with a mere fraction of LAUSD's students.

I lived in South Pasadena for 10 yrs, the Westside Pasadena/San Marino/South Pasadena triangle along with CalTech, JPL (technically in La Canada which is another great area in SGV), Huntington Library, Norton Simon, Rosebowl…..etc is what I consider one of the best places to live (and raise a family) in the Metro Los Angeles area. It’s not just for Asian communities, the faculty of CalTech (which contains many Noble Prize winners.), many medical professionals (Pasadena is a medical hub with hospitals affiliated with UCLA, USC and Cedar Sinai.) live here so plenty of non-Asians.

South Pasadena, for example, is only 8 miles to DTLA. It literally borders the city of Los Angeles.

SFV is probably as nice as you said, I’m not all that familiar with it. Like how superficially you know of SGV, I have a very superficial impression of “the Valley”: porn industry (so no thank you), the Kardashians (so ko thank you), cookie cutter housing, summer heat, Real Housewives (didn’t quite a few of them move to the Valley with their over the top McMansions? Saw stuff like this in the airport, in passing.) (so another no thank you)-it may have the beach-adjacent factor but why would I want to live there if I could live in near the beach area or better yet, on the Westside?!

I could be wrong about SFV (just like you were with SGV) but it feels very suburban to me. Where we were in SGV, plenty of walkable neighborhoods and street-level activities. It’s also not as cookie cutter depressing.

In SGV at least I get to have the most fancy part of Pasadena, endless things to do with children, (KidSpace museum when my daughter was little. I met people driving all the way from the Valley to KidSpace.) beautiful scenery, (try driving on the 210 going into Pasadena direction, at some point you are face to face to the San Gabriel mountains that feel like it’s about to hit your face.-very awestruck experience, which I always love. The mountains are majestic and I’m not even a mountain person at all.) many well-educated, generally more low-key people than what people’s stereotype “people in LA.”type. Saw celebrities in Pasadena Wholefoods all the time, nobody made a fuss. (You don’t make a big deal about celebrities in cities like NYC and L.A.)

I need to explore SFV, I am sure it’s not as depressing as it is in my head.
Agreed. West SGV (Pasadena/LCF/San Marino/SP) kicks the crap out of anywhere in the SFV. More educated people. Fewer industry types. Fewer transplants.

On top of that, it literally has everything that a major metro area would have to offer (sports, concerts, events at the Rosebowl; arts/music/plays at the Civic Auditorium and Playhouse; parks and recreational areas at Descanso Gardena, Rosebowl, Huntington, Eaton Canyon, LA County Arboretum; good access to a regional airport that is not the hell-on-earth experience which is LAX; phenomenal schools public in most of the cities or private in Pasadena).

Honestly, if you live in this area there's literally no reason to even leave except to go to the beach if you really want to do that. And then I would either go to Malibu or Orange County.

Yes, I agree with everything except Descanso is stretching it a bit... well I guess it's on the line and belongs more to the Pasadena area than to Burbank or Sunland, etc. Does the SFV have all these things? No. They have a lot of post WWII houses, zillions of apartments all crammed together, strip malls and what else?

I have to agree. The SGV is probably the most authentic, cultural part of LA and for the most part has areas with a lot of character. Most of the SFV is strip malls and muffler shops.

The geography is not very precise in that area. Pasadena/LCF/Altadena/La Crescenta/Sunland/Tujunga often are considered part of the "Verdugo Valley" and not even part of the San Gabriel

Regardless, Pasadena acts as the major entertainment and employment center for all of the bordering bedroom communities.
