You mention walking quite a few times. What do you consider a reasonable walk? Unless you're speed walking I would imagine anything more than a mile to two from campus would be too long of a walk time-wise.

Any of the areas posted would be good for distance. Not too far and good areas. And rents are coming down, so you should be able to find a reasonable place for more reasonable money.

We don't mind a 1 or 2 mile walk...as long as it's safe. The biggest issue was finding an area outside of the Westwood area (to avoid the college scene and be in a more mature community) but still not have to deal with a headache commute to and from campus. Being able to use public transport or bike/foot effeciently and relatively quickly would be wonderful. Sounds like West LA and Santa Monica are potentially good places. We will be visiting in a few weeks, so driving around neighborhoods will give us a better sense of things...i hope

Either of those will be fine, although they aren't in walking distance. But in peak rush hour are probably within 20-30 minutes depending on exactly where you are.
