Hi everyone,

I am going to Sci-arc (a private architecture school) located in downtown Los Angeles and my boyfriend is going to CSU long beach. We both have moved down from northern California and are not familiar with the neighborhoods around Los Angeles. We really need some help to find a nice and safe neighborhood that would be between our schools (preferably closer to downtown LA). We would really appreciate any comment.

Thank you all in advance.

The closer you get to downtown LA, the worse it gets. CSULB is near the eastern edge of Long Beach. Either live there or possibly Downey. Downey is the only city anywhere close to half way that I ever hear anything good at all about.

I would suggest living in Long Beach. Pretty much the whole eastern half of Long Beach is nice (and suburban). And of course there's Belmont shores too, which is a possibility for a more walkable area. One idea if you two want to equally share the hassles is to live in downtown Long Beach in walking distance to the Blue line station. That way one of you takes the train to downtown LA and the other one takes the Long Beach Passport bus to the CSULB campus. Only one trip each, no transfers necessary.

Live in Long Beach and use the Blue Line to get into LA. There are no good towns directly in between, and Downey would be commutes for both.

downey would be halfway between those two places. not too awful commutes, but it would be boring.

sci arc is located right by the river and in the industrial area of LA. you can always bike or walk form the 7th street metro station. but its about 2 miles away. there might be a DASH or a metro bus. the area around the "industrial arts" section of LA is coming up. but it aint there yet.

aside from being equidistant from Long beach state and sci arc, what else are you looking for?

nightlife? restaurants? parks? theaters? do you mind all white neighborhoods? all black? all brown? prefer mixed? apt housing? duplex?

what else are you looking for?

oh and in all seriousness you can also look at compton or carson. there are some nice areas.

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments.
My boyfriend is currently living in Belmont shores; the IDEAL place!
But I will be at school min 10 hours a day and can't afford to spend 2 hours on commuting.
I could convince him to live around downtown LA, but not north of it. (He means it is another extra distance)
What areas would be ok with max 1400 a month?

I would prefer mixed areas, ideally mixed students! Safe areas; meaning, being able to come back from school at midnight if I need to. Nightlife and restaurants would be nice. I prefer duplex more than apt housing.
What would be the nice neighborhoods in Campton and Carson?
Thanks
