My mother is a recent retiree who did not plan very well. She needs to leave the country to go live with a relative for a few months and will return once we have managed to purchase her a retirement condo and get her resettled. We need to find a temporary home for her border collie until she returns. Sadly, the border collie cannot stay with us (chases our poor cats). Can anyone out there recommend a long term boarding solution? Ideally, we'd love to find someone who has a large property who wouldn't mind having a pleasant friendly dog around for a few months. We're totally willing to pay a food stipend. Any thoughts or advice would be much, much, much appreciated. Retirement is difficult enough as it is without stressing over your pet.

Hello saturnfly. If you haven't already, try Craigslist. Good luck finding a temporary home for your border collie.

Have you tried pet sitters? Or something similar.

My son and his GF stayed with me for a few months while they got their feet on the ground after moving cross country. Anyway, they brought along their dog, in the beginning the dog chased my 2 cats (12 & 17 y/o), but they ended up best friends.

My point is, can you take the dog and see what happens in a month? It won't happen over-night, you have to give it some time.

I am sure you will find a wonderful foster home for the baby. I have to laugh though, our 2 cats do fine with our doggie, sometimes they do play tag or I can get you, but usually we survive, even though our little dog is a pain. The trouble starts when our granddaughter brings her dog over. Alone he too is fine with his cat, get him and our dog together and they are like 2 little first graders at rescess terrorizing girls, they make our poor cats lives so miserable the 2 kitties go to the laundry room, just up above the cabinets into their perch and will stay until granddaughter leaves, sometimes it takes them 24 hours to return to the real world.
