The whole point is to get them to not overlook your resume because of your location. They'll go right through and toss out all the non-local ones before even screening you if they have enough applicants.

I understand the point of doing it. I just think (wonder?) that it looks terrible when you actually get a call from HR and have to admit that you basically lied.

I'm not an HR person (although I have done hiring in the past), but here's my two cents. Like bhcompy notes, the trick is to get through the first screening. Given that almost every job is going to get bombarded with dozens (or hundreds) of resumes, it may well be worth listing that local address on top. You could perhaps assuage some of your guilt by also including a cover letter; in the cover letter you can say something about where you currently live, note that you are willing to fly yourself out for an interview and will, of course, that you expect no relocation assistance, that you can start work within two weeks (or whatever), and that given the nature of your upcoming move you prefer using your LA address to ensure that no correspondence gets lost or delayed in the mail. They don't need to know that you're only moving after you get a job, or that it's your friend's address. That way you'd be both honest as well as get through that initial superficial screening. It also means that if you look like a really good fit they might be willing to do an initial phone interview before making you fly all the way out to CA for an interview.

That sounds great! Thank you.

Has anybody done this before?

It is good advise and may work. Most companies now do the first interview over the phone anyway or a lot do. I know a person who is often on this forum who is moving from Ca to AR. She was willing to fly herself to AR and it worked. She got the interview.

It does not take very much of a background to check to see where someone is really living. Don't do it!! you may end up being black listed!
