Hey everyone in SoCal. I've made plans to travel from Dallas to LAX at the end of this month.

The reason for my trip is to see the Irish rock band U2 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

So I have a couple of questions for anyone who has lived in the Los Angeles area for a long time.

Has the Rose Bowl Stadium ever been used for large-scale concerts?

Or are U2 the first major international music act to play at the Rose Bowl?

I'm curious to know whether or not the Rose Bowl is typically rented for such purposes.

Does anybody know for sure? Does anybody remember?

Thanks for the info, everyone!

LOL. I remember seeing concerts there in the 80's and 90's. I think I saw NWA or 2LiveCrew there at their peak. If I remember correctly, Madonna played it as well.

It's a big enough stadium to seat 85,000 or upwards of 100K I believe.

The Rose Bowl has hosted large scale concerts before, biggest before I think was the Rolling Stones. Rose Bowl, police officials taking extraordinary measures for upcoming U2 concert - Pasadena Star-News

The U2 concert will be the biggest because of the stage configuration and the fact they can use all of the seats. And don't forget the stadium hosts big sporting events like, well the Rose Bowl. And they have had the Super Bowl there a couple of times.

Yes, the Rose Bowl has been used for big concerts (although this is the biggest), for Super Bowls, for World Cup games, big rallies, and for all sorts of other major events.

Yup...besides seeing plenty of UCLA games and Rose Bowls, I remember the '93 Super Bowl there, doing all that NFL community stuff around the bowl the week before the game as a high school senior, going to the game, and the World Cup a couple of years later I think it was '95. Good good times.

Oh yeah and the fireworks shows every fourth of July. Although my mom's place has a jetliner view above the whole area so it's pretty damn spectacular to just chill in the backyard with a couple of nice adult beverages and take in the show, and take in the audience taking in the show.

Thanks for helping out, guys.

But have any huge concerts taken place at the Rose Bowl during the 2000's (besides U2 on Oct 25)?

I'm fairly certain that there haven't been any other huge concerts in the 2000s, although multiple other large events (but not concerts) have drawn similar crowds of 90,000+.

While other acts have performed in concert at The Rose Bowl, this will be the biggest concert ever held there.

I'll wave to you from across the stadium! I can't believe I'm actually doing this; I can't stand crowds!

Oh, and there's going to be a live stream of the concert on YouTube.

I've also heard they're going to make a DVD from this concert, too. I figure I should wear something bright red, so I can point to the pin-sized dot, and say, "Look, that's me!" to all my friends.
