Just a quick question for those who've done this trip. We would be around 3 to 4 people and will be switching drivers during the drive.

Thanks!

Very doable. It's a little under 800 miles, so depending on your speed, stops, traffic when you reach LA, etc., 12-15 hours. My wife and I drove it in a day. Pretty drive through the desert, too.

By round trip you mean going there and back in the same day? It's possible to get there in one day, but there and back wouldn't be the best idea even if it was possible timewise(which is very marginal)

I've done it. It's a nice scenic drive. Took about 11-12 hours with a stop for lunch and a stop for gas. My advice would be to try and do all travel by daylight. We were traveling in the dark for the last 4-5 hours on our way out and we had a few near misses with wildlife running out in front of our car.

We went on a 5 day weekend to make it worth it.

In one day? No Way! If you started in the wee hours of the morning, you still wouldn't get to LA until the end of the day in the evening or late evening, with not much time to do anything. the distance is 810 miles and an estimated 12 hours, but count on it being longer than that as traffic conditions are never ideal. Do you see now how outrageous that is? If you stayed in LA at least a day, yeah sure, but you would not have much time to do anything then either. You should plan on at least a few days. I know driving is cheaper, but a flight is about 1 hour. Now, that is doable in one day, but it would be tough.

Provide us with a bit more info to help you. Also, if you plan to drive in and out on a weekday, worse traffic, although weekends also have their congested freeways, as well.

Of course it's doable in a day with a rotating shift of drivers. Heck, the speed limit is 70 mph all the way and, once you clear the LA sprawl, it's hammer down to Albuquerque unless it's snowing around Flagstaff. I ROUTINELY travel 900-1000 miles in 12-14 hours by myself and I'm 60 years old! If I can do that, surely you four can do at least as well.

Just keep the left door closed as much as possible and you'll be surprised at how much ground you can cover.

Sorry about not giving more details. to clear up the confusion, we'd be staying for a friday and the weekend once we get there. I was just wondering how others handled the trip mentally and physically. :P thanks!

Mentally and Physically?

Its really not that bad of a drive. 1k miles per day starts to get rough, but i've done that on my motorcycle without issue.

The only issue i can see is time .... assuming google maps is relatively accurate, If you leave at 8am on Friday ... You'll arrive Friday evening. To get back at a reasonable time on Sunday, do the math. You'll really only have one full day there.

But I say ... go for it! The drive is almost always the best part of a trip, in my opinion.

Default Little Miss Sunshine

The (road) movie "Little Miss Sunshine" is doing exactly this route.

Best film ever! (They spent 1,5 days though, including a few unpredicted obstacles...)
