Honestly, with the number of people coming to LA to "be in the business", it's crazy. Do they ever consider the current economy when they're thinking about being a star? It seems like an automatic reflex...come to LA, be a star.

-But what if its hard to be a star with traffic, a recession/depression, stiff competition?

I agree with the baseball analogy, at least you know where you stand. With acting, its such hit or miss.

-Although on the other hand, go for your dreams! I'm all for that. If I lived in the midwest or in a small town and had dreams of making it in hollywood or california, sure, go for it. Spend a few years having fun. Be sure to be realistic, don't let it take over your life.

Being realistic would defeat the whole reason for wanting to be an actor. Escapism is more the name of the game with a healthy dose of fantasy and ego. The term "struggling actor" should be a hint as to what to expect in the beginning which could last for many years but even worse now. Must be nice to live in a fantasy world.

I believe we have crap like The Hills to thank for people coming out with that mentality. People are moving to LA thinking they are going to be handed a reality show by MTV and spend their days shopping on Robertson Blvd and their nights partying at hot Hollywood clubs.

Unfortunately most reality shows began in Southern Ca. Nick and Jessica, Laguna Beach, The Housewives of Orange County, The Hills, and what I consider one of the worst and most tasteless..The Kardashians. What losers.

I say absolutely go! Follow your dream. But have a backup plan. If it doesn't work out... it doesn't work out. But at least you tried.

I know a couple of people who never really even tried following their dream, and they're pretty bitter about it. Ending up in porn or selling drugs sucks... but so does ending up as a bitter angry person with regrets.

There's virtually nothing in movies or television today that I would actually feel proud to appear in; an endless parade of mediocre ( or worse) sitcoms, B-level movies and embarassing reality shows, easily forgettable and of no lasting quality..

There's really no reason to have cable...you're not missing anything.

I doubt most end up better angry people plus do you realize the OP is long gone. He has posted a few times since but on totally different subjects. I wonder why the thread was reincarnated..

It's funny, "I Love Lucy" dealt with moving to hollywood to become a star.

But in those days, it was so much more reasonable and realistic. Everything was so cheap. There was no traffic. There were about 8 million less people.

But it seems like an almost automatic reflex. "Move to hollywood, be a star". "Move to hollywood, be a star". Even if we have no decent public transportation. Even during a housing bubble. Even if wages aren't very good. Even when its almost impossible to get from one side of the city to the other. You're going to have to live close to the studios and where you audition.

It's funny in LA, most of the young waiters, waitress look like actors. You dont even have to ask. They have this hollywood, actor vibe.
