This was in the LA Times two weeks ago, when I posted it.

Major work on 405 widening project to start Jan. 12 - latimes.com

The Remarkable Legend of the 405 Freeway -- Fact or Fiction?

Does anyone know how it will be widened? Will additional land be acquired on the sides? Or, will the new lane be squeezed in there by shrinking existing lanes and shoulder? The two number 1 lanes are right up against the cement center divider now.

For at least some of the project, encroachment into the combined I-405 / Sepulveda right of way strip appears to be the path of least resistance.

Where it becomes a challenge is where the 405 takes the jog away from Sepulveda, there may have to be some eminent domain.

On closer inspection, it appears there is sufficient easement for much of the project.

(I didn't check yet), But what about between Sunset and the 10? It's so dense there past the Veterans area, Santa Monica Boulevard, and Pico.

This is going to be a mess. That stretch is always busy, evenings, weekends, always. The construction will make the 405 even worse than the hell it currently is.

Here is some good news I didn't read earlier:

That's what I thought as well, based on how one experiences it from the perspective of driving the 405. But using Google bird's eye view, there is actually room. Not much, but it's there. Essentially, you'll have the sound wall right at the edge of whatever street is parallel in any given area (or, as the case may be, right at the edge of a parking lot, etc). There will be only a minimal shoulder. Also, in places the center may have to move, as there are places with room on only one side of the freeway.

It will end up being like the Bayshore up here, through the denser part of San Mateo County, but with more lanes than the Bayshore.
