I will be visiting LA for a month early next year. I want to probably stay in the center of LA to be near a train station so that I do not have to drive everywhere all the time. Is there anything that I need to know about riding the train in LA in general?

I rode it before from LAX to Downtown and didn't have any problems. When I rode it years had to pay on each line that you take so if you take the green line from LAX to the blue line downtown I think I had to pay twice. Is it the same now or is it where you can pay one time per trip?

Is it reliable and safe in general?

Thanks!

You can get to most major destinations by train or by train and a short bus trip.

You no longer have to pay for transfers as long as it’s in a two hour window after your first TAP. Essentially all the buses from the different agencies use TAP as far as I’m aware.

The underground lines and elevated are usually the most reliable. Trains on the street a little less so. Lately the blue, green and gold lines have been having issues with power with planned maintenance. May be done when you come.

Someone was just stabbed to death on the gold line but in general I feel safe on trains especially during commute times.

Take the trains in LA all the time. Never had any problems. Most people that say transit are bad in LA probably have never tried it before.

When I visited LA several years ago I used to think the transit system would be horrible but it was actually a lot better than I thought. I didn't have any problems with people trying to fight or argue with me. I think that other poster is trying to scare people from using mass transit.
