With a population of 3.8 or 4 million, would you imagine LA dropping in numbers due to the city's financial crisis and liberal politicians?

With a city so expensive as LA, how could anyone afford it if the population is increasing?

I wouldn't hold my breath wishing for liberal politics to lower the population of Los Angeles. You seem to have quite an imagination!

If the city does not get through its current financial crisis, the population falling is a matter of when, not if. There are many things that could go REALLY wrong and which would have devastating consequences, and a fall in population would be a result of said consequences. OTOH it is also possible that the city will be able to resolve these problems. It's really in uncharted territory right now without any past precedent and hard to predict what will happen.

If L.A. didn't have an increasing population, it would be less expensive.

And I wouldn't say that liberal politicians are the problem ; incompetent and inept politicians are the problem as well as a dysfunctional governing structure. Doesn't matter whether they're conservative or liberal. These are things California seems to have an unhealthy high tolerance for.

I think this is anyone's guess. I remember when Detroit was the third largest city in the country, but Los Angeles isn't Detroit either. The financual problems in Los Angeles as well as throughout the state are scary.. You can't keep living on borrowed money and that seems to be what the politicians want to see happen, either that of cut services which can also be a disaster.

Very interesting question. We have NOT seen any evidence of this YET. The link below discusses how the LA County population is growing at a moderate pace, despite all the economic upheavel.

L.A. area population rising again, new census data show | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times

I don't have the latest figures for the CITY. Here are figures from the State Dept. of Finance which creates estimates of the county's population.

Here's a look at LA County's population growth from 2000 to 2009. All data are for July 1st of the year measured.

2000: 9,576,124
2001: 9,735,989
2002: 9,892,467
2003: 10,021,781
2004: 10,120,317
2005: 10,185,761
2006: 10,216,702
2007: 10,252,245
2008: 10,341,410
2009: 10,409,035

Clearly, the growth rates have slowed as compared to earlier decades....we have a larger base now. The growth in recent years has come from a combination of "natural increase" (births over deaths) and "net migration" which in LA's case is foreign migration from abroad.

The latest figures for the CITY of Los Angeles I could find on the Dept. of Finance's website are as follows (data are for Jan. 1st of year measured):

CITY of LA population
2008: 4,022,450
2009: 4,065,585

That is a 1.1% growth rate...

As long as this is the city to come to for aspiring actors hoping to "get discovered", the population will not fall.

Metro LA has about 12 Million people . I dont see number that falling in our lifetimes.

Compared to other big cities, except New York and San Francisco, I know we are costly. But people make it work because it is a terrific place.

And there are many people and politicians who are not the dreaded L word.

Are you here already or are you moving here?

Why are people so fixated on population?

Worlds largest slums, i.e. in India, China, etc have humongous populations, well ahead of the cities that matter - New York, London, etc.

Stop worrying about population and worry more about the lousy Los Angeles economy. Hollywood is an industry which attracts low IQ trash, and Los Angeles needs to diversify stat.

This idea that Hollywood fuels LA's economy is such a widespread misconception.

Columns - City of Industry - Los Angeles magazine

"UCLA’s Anderson Forecast estimates that L.A. County’s gross domestic product, which is the value of an area’s goods and services, weighs in at $380 billion. Entertainment’s share—that means mostly movies and TV shows—is roughly $20 billion, or 5.3 percent. Both health care and durable goods manufacturing are greater contributors."
