My family is moving to the LA Area. I'm in the Air Force and will be working in El Segundo at LA AFB.

We have been scouring the Internet for where to live and the houses that we like keep ending up in Norco. Here is what we are looking for:

3+ Bed
2+ Bath
2+ Garage (bigger the better)
Single level only
Large RV parking 60+ feet that won't block the garage...

$400k

I can find all of these things in Norco, but is the commute doable? I have heard that there are van-pools that I can get on to make the commute easier.

Any Opinions?

That is a really long commute. Stresses me out just thinking about doing that...

Google Maps says anywhere from 2-3 hours one way with traffic. Yikes.

i wouldn't recommend buying right away. seriously, rent a house for a the first 6 months to a year and get to know the area and see what kind of commute will and won't work from others who work on base. that is a really, really long drive (60 minutes with no traffic, which is almost never). unless you're going to be working 6am-2pm or something like that, I would never recommend living in norco and commuting to el segundo. if you must buy, there are some nice areas of long beach that might be within your budget. most are older homes, but they are in safe neighborhoods with decent to good schools.

Why did you select Norco? It seems to me there are tons of places a lot closer that fit your criteria.

I guessing that all of you missed the part about wanting a single level with an RV space that is 60+ ft and does not block the Garage.
The base housing is about 45 min south of the base and is pretty nice but doesn't fit our needs, it has RV storage that has a 2yr wait list. They also don't have single level homes.
Before everyone says that we could rent storage, I just want to say, that is not an option for us, I would rather commute and have the extra space if possible.

If there are tons of places that are closer I wish they came up on the MLS...

if you think you can handle that commute then more power to you, we're just trying to give you an idea of bad it will be. if you leave any time after 6am it will take you at least 30 minutes just to get to the orange county border. from there traffic probably won't be too bad until you get to the 105. it could easily take you an hour to get from one end of the 105 to the other during morning rush hour. considering you have a pregnant wife, do you really want to be on the road for 4 hours everyday? a vanpool may help so you don't have to drive by yourself everyday, but it won't help the travel time (the carpool/HOV lanes are as slow as the regular lanes at the hour).

since you asked for opinions, here's mine: norco should only be a consideration if you can start before 7am and get off before 3pm.
