From Vermont to DeRidder? That's taking a huge step down. There is nothing going for that bland town.

Deridder is terrible. I have been living here for the past 3 years and it has been the most depressing and horrible 3 years of my life. It is FAR from everything. If you want to go to a decent mall, it's an hour drive. A different restaurant? An hour drive. Everything I have like here has closed it's doors. FYE-closed The italian restaurant -closed chinese buffet-closed. These are very small things but when you live in this land of the dammed, they will count. If you like church, they have a million of them. In fact, they have so many they are in the guiness book of world records. Honestly it's a depressing place. Leesville is 30 minutes up the highway and it's a soldier town right next to fort polk. More to do there but it's worse off in other ways. Deridder is very secluded and quiet. I would say it's a good town to settle down in if you have a big family and were raised here. Me being from up North, it's a no-go. I love the other real cities in Louisiana but Deridder is a horror story. Unless you like being alone a lot, camping, fishing, hunting or sitting on your porch' which is what a majority of people do...your not gonna like it. Your choices for work are one of 4 choices. Prisons, casino's, off shore, and fort polk. They are the places within a 45 minute driving distance that you will get a fairly good paying job.

Default I was born and raised in DeRidder

Hello, I am 35 and have lived in DeRidder my entire life. Matter a fact I have deep family roots here. I went through a time when I wanted to leave this town, then I got married and had kids. When my kids came along I knew I was not going any where. I feel extremely comfortable with my kids in school here and am confident that they are in good hands. My husband and I both work in Leesville as successful business owners, the DeRidder job market is not the greatest but there are jobs out there, you just have to go get them.
My husband was told the other day by a business owner that he was in desperate need of good employees. I know of many places that are hiring. Our area is surviving and thriving because of Fort Polk, Thank God for our military. As far as your husbands work, a carpet store may not be the way to go but because of our military we have new construction homes going up like crazy and if he gets in with one of the many many builders, he will make it just fine. Also Fort Polk is building lots of new homes on base. I would love to talk to you further, please feel free to email me. I am very familiar with the area, job market and housing market as well, (it's my job!!) Please let me know if I can help.

Thanks

I lived in the rosepine/deridder area for several years. They really were the best years of my life. I worked at wal mart, and it was great. I really miss it. I wish i had stayed there. I came to alabama for a visit, and decided to move home due to my parents health. I have thought about moving back.

I lived in DeRidder for about a year. Small, quiet town. Would be a nice place to live if you're retired or owned a business but I wouldn't want to live there if I was looking for a job. I lived in Green Acres, right behind the Mobil station as you got into town.

If I ever got stationed at Polk again, I hope I don't, then I would live in Rosepine by the Dollar store there.

Leesville work is too tied to Fort Polk. As the Army shrinks, I would expect a lot of those jobs to dry up.
