Safety Inspection for car? (New Orleans: insurance, home, DMV)

My husband and I have moved to LA from Indiana, and I need to get LA license plates for our vehicles. Do I need to have any kind of inspection on our cars before I can get the plates?

I know a sticker is required by law...before or after the plates is a question I've never had to ask myself. I would assume it has to come before though.

You can get the plates first . Make sure you have proof of insurance when you go to the DMV or it will be a wasted trip .

I learned that the hard way! I still had insurance from my previous home state, but that didn't count. I did not need to show proof of any kind of safety inspection, and actually forgot to even ask if an annual inspection is required in Louisiana. I still don't know the answer to that.

Move to Louisiana.

Get insurance issued within the state of Louisiana (prior states don't count). It must be a Louisiana Insurance Card issued with your auto policy

Drive to DPS

Register your car, write check to cover road use tax (sure hope you still have invoice from car to prove you paid tax to Indiana, or you get to pay the whole amount again. If you have invoice, you only have to pay half - to register our two cars was over $1500 when we moved from NY to LA)

Change plates in DPS parking lot (mail old plates back to old state if required)

You then have 24 hours to get the car inspected. Yes, you do have to have an inspection after registration.

It's $10 (cash only!) It takes all of ten minutes and consists of checking tread on tires, wipers, headlights, brakelights, brakes (does car stop?), and honk horn.

Like I said, cash only.
