Sorry to revive an old thread, but how exactly did the state plan on extending I-49 to New Orleans? It just seems that a lot of neighborhoods would have to be torn down in Lafayette to reroute the highway.

I was hoping it would go slightly east, around the airport and meet up before Broussard. As of now, an elevated freeway is being considered, unfortunately.

As far as I know, there is a strong push back from residents about the environmental impact and traffic impact of the I-49 project thru Lafayette. I think right now it is still on hold.

Right now the only progress on I-49 has been in southern parishes like St. Mary where they just did the LA 318 intersection.

The Lafayette portion is stalled out due to political grandstanding.

So things are a very long ways away.

There is a lot of construction going on with roads and it is so needed. Right now I think it’s been accepted that the I49 will run directly through Lafayette. Last I heard there were some meetings to decide a final design.

In other news they are widening I10 to 3 lanes all the way to the Atchafalaya bridge. I wish they would have just widened all the way to Scott. It’s getting bad. Traffic volume is increasing quickly along with people who can’t drive.. There are upgrades for I49 south happening in Broussard slowly. A new over pass and upgrading/widening the bridge.

Lafayette is chugging along but due to the downturn in oil it’s chugging slowly these days. I will probably have moved away in just a year Before seeing any of the benefits.

It seems that the hardest part of getting I-49 through Lafayette would be this part of US-90

I know that Shreveport's interchange with I-49 and I-220 is going to have two flyover ramps and a basic ramp. It appears that the smoothest transition from I-49 to 2-220 will be I-49 south to I-220 west. It appears that I-49 comes to a halt at the I-20 interchange and then picks up as a separate route further north (soon to be connected to I-220).
