I was just accepted to ULM graduate program and I need advice. I've been doing my research and I've honestly found nothing positive about the area which makes me nervous. I am a white female and wondering where a safe place to live would be? I saw west Monroe is nicer but most post say the paper mill odor is unbearable. Anyone have any advice on which apartments to rent? Would near campus be my best bet? I am concerned of the crime being in an unfamiliar area. Thanks.

I don't know much about Monroe but I did stay on campus for a couple weeks and it was nice (Bon Aire Dr). I'd try to stay close to campus. Trulia crime maps has the whole Monroe/West Monroe area in green (lowest crime).

Stay close to campus, associate mostly with the campus community as far as extra curricular activities and and friends, and on Spring Break or other vacations go to New Orleans or somewhere else.

Monroe is the pits but ULM is good.

i've lived in wm/monroe area most of my life. west monroe is safer, but a commute to ulm can be a nightmare, especially if you have early am classes. crime in monroe is very area specific. you want to avoid any of the housing right around ulm's campus. it's never been a great area, but there has also been a recent spike in crime. i suggest looking in the 165 north area in north monroe and lakeshore. plenty of apartments and townhouses that are still near ulm but where a single girl should feel safe
