We are seriously considering moving to LA. We would like a medium sized town, near a college, very little crime, and out of hurricane path. Does anyone know of an area that sounds like this? I know that it seems like a lot to ask, but we would like an area of peace to live in for a long while. Thank you for any help you may be able to give.

Try Ruston. Close enough to Shreveport for you to get away for the weekend (less than 1 hour down the road) and far out of the way of the hurricanes. Home to Louisiana Tech University, low crime, and a lot of millionaires per capita. Nice town.

Bossier City, in NW corner of LA. It has low crime, better than average (for La) public schools. LSUS for a 4 year school, Bossier Parish CC for a 2 year school. More positives than negatives, overall.

Natchitoches, LA.
It's a decent sized town. Great restaurants, shopping centers, grocery stores and a beautiful historic downtown and plantation homes. Festival of Lights at Christmas as well!
Northwestern State University is in town. Great college! Great band! Great football team! Not much crime to speak of. Definitely out of hurricane path as it's in the northern part of Louisiana - about 50 miles north of Alexandria.

As an lamost life-long resident of LA, I second the suggestion for Natchitoches. It's very charming, as well.

Well as much as I wanna say Monroe, Louisiana as perfect as it is for u, (with the University of Louisiana-Monroe, lots of forms of waters and good eats, always dodges storms, very highly secured with one of the biggest polices forces in the state for its size, prolly the best diverse selection of churches and locations of houses with a homely atmosphere)...............Id prolly third u with natchitoches....but I can't live in a sweet lil' ole town like natchitoches, Ill get spoil and lazy of that almond tea and festivals. So try Ruston with the second best truly eclectic university in the state, Louisiana Tech. Weather is always good in northern Louisiana, and Shreveport and Monroe is right up the highway in opposite directions. Wherever u go Ill be so happy if u end up in Louisiana, because there not a better place to find stronger persistently happy people than here in the boot. Whether its your first time or your coming back, we welcome u with open arms and a bowl of jambalaya with fleur le de lis pendant(the saints symbol)!!!

I'll recommend Ruston, I think it meets your criteria. Thibodaux would be a good place but it has definite hurricane problems. Good luck.

We need more specific information.
What type of crime are you concerned about? Political Corruption? Burglary? Shootings? Drugs?
Even if you are concerned about drugs, people deal drugs on the low and you wouldn't even know it, so you have be specific.

Who are you? Do you like you cook? fish? exercise? read? hunt? go to church? love gardening? dance? etc.
Political preference?

Someone can say Ruston "They have a track that the public can use, a great library, a great mountain bike park"
Or Shreveport "They have great casinos, people who like high school football, and I want to sent my kids to Caddo Magnet"

Why do you want to live near a college? For the atmosphere? Where are you from?
Colleges in Louisiana aren't in college towns like Auburn, and UGA, except for LSU and ULL.

Smile more details

Thank you all for responding, you are all very friendly, and it is nice to have the help. Moving states seems to me to be very formidable. The type of crimes that I would definitely be concerned with are sexual assualt, and anything to do with kids. I have 3 children and want them to be able to play outdoors without me feeling neurotic. Which will probably happen anyway. The reason for college is because I need to finish my 4 year and go to law school. The reason for low cost of living is because I need to be able to support my family and go to school. I would like to be able to still put a roof over their heads and give them little extras too. I love the feel of small towns, but love the amenities of bigger towns. I feel that I want to be somewhere that I feel is perfect for us. So I am researching as much as possible before making my choice. I want to be able to make the most out of my life that I can. In answering, I like to read, bake, and go to museums. I am from a small town in Montana originally, but I cannot move back as the job situation is grim and the cold hurts my joints. I want my children to grow up safe and to have every opportunity available to them but I want to be able to spend time with them and watch them enjoy life also.
